An old journalism adage says that if your mother says she loves you, check it out. But the Chicago Daily News’ alumni bulletin says that phrase went through rewrite.

A piece in the July-August 2005 issue states that Ed Eulenberg at City News coined the phrase, but that it originally was, “If your mother says she loves you, smack her sharply in the shins and make her prove it.”
