With recent OPRF graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, each week Wednesday Journal will be keeping readers informed of their progress. Stats are through Sunday.
OPRF outfielder Andrew Hagins was picked by Tampa Bay in the 28th round (829th overall) on the second day of the MLB draft June 7. Though Hagins has committed to St. Francis University, an NAIA school in Joliet, OPRF head coach Chris Ledbetter said in an email that Hagins is considering a junior college. Ledbetter said he is not sure what Hagins will decide to do. Former Huskie Tim Dennehy was selected in a similar position last year (19th round) but opted for a junior college in Arizona.
Double A New Britain’s Justin Olson allowed a homer to the first batter he faced Saturday but then struck out the side in his second inning of work. He went two innings after the Rock Cats’ starter spotted Harrisburg an 8-1 lead after four. Olson also threw two scoreless innings June 7 against Akron. He has a 4.76 ERA and is averaging 10.48 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
Vasili Spanos went 2-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs Saturday as Double A Midland pummeled Frisco 18-2. He went 6-for-21 (.286) on the week as his average dropped slightly to .321. Spanos’ 15-game hitting streak ended Thursday and he received a day off Sunday after playing in 43 straight games.
