Katie Pozorski Styer grew up on Clinton Ave. in Oak Park, attending Emerson School with me from kindergarten through 8th grade.
She was very, very bright, with a sweet smile and a gentle way about her. Katie’s only crime was that she didn’t come to school all styled up in the latest from Lytton’s. Her mother dressed her sensibly in ankle socks, oxfords and longer dresses.
For this crime, a boy we’ll call X taunted her unmercifully. I still have a picture them in the playground. He looked like an angry bird of prey. She looked like a mouse.
Forty years later, X has a career producing TV shows. He hooked up with me a couple of years ago via Classmates.com, but when I called him, he was too wrapped up in “The Bachelor” or something to talk to me. He never called back or even emailed. Typical.
Katie died of cancer in the Spring of 2004. Co-workers and friends remembered her as bright, hardworking and caring. She left her husband Dan and two lovely boys.
Funny how we’re still the kids we used to be …
