Your recent cover story on the scourge of panhandling [“Panhandling grows, so do concerns,” News, Oct. 31] calls to mind, in its mix of smug moralizing and mean-spiritedness, a line from an old Mike Nichols and Elaine May routine about that other bastion of self-impressed liberalism, Hyde Park. Here’s how they put it: “Black and white, arm in arm, against the poor.”
