As work is under way at Scoville Park to repair, clean and secure the World War I Memorial, planning is in progress on other fronts for the rededication ceremony and for a a book about the project.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, the Park District of Oak Park is hosting a meeting at the memorial for conservator Andrzej Dajnowski to update people interested in the project about progress on the job. After the conservator’s talk, there will be a discussion about plans for the rededication, which – if restoration work is done in time – will be on Veterans Day.
In the meantime, Ed Avis, the Oak Park publisher best known for Marion Street Press, is gathering information for what he hopes will initially be an exhibit and eventually a book on Oak Park and River Forest residents who served in the armed forces during World War I.
Avis is looking for photos, diaries, letters and any other historical records from the period. If you do have such items, Avis says he’s happy to stop by your home to talk to you and pick them up. You can call him at 708-386-9629 or e-mail him at edavis@scovillememorial.com.
