Despite the frigid temperatures on Saturday, the Trinity softball team was itching to play a game. The Blazers kept warm during the sub-40 degree afternoon by annihilating Whitney Young 22-1 in five innings at Ruby Field in Melrose Park.
Trinity, last year’s Class 3A State runner-up, allowed the one run in the top of the first inning, but answered with eight runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Nicole Evans (RBI single), Chase Machain (two-RBI single), Michela Williams (two-RBI double) and Abby Ramirez (two-run homer) all had a hand in the early surge.
Trinity added two more runs in the second off RBI singles by Erin Baldwin and Meg Bura. The team blew open the game with a 10-run effort in the third, capped by an RBI double by Ramirez, who finished 5-for-5 with four RBIs on the day.
Machain, who yielded just two hits in four innings on the mound, went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs. Bura closed out the game in the final inning with two strikeouts.
Gianna Codut was also strong at the plate for the Blazers, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
“It was a beautiful sunny Saturday,” joked Trinity head coach Bob Osborne, “but no we are just a little crazy. We were so tired of practicing inside I think we would have played in a blizzard.”
The Blazers, who are playing up in Class 4A this season, will take on some formidable teams in the coming weeks, beginning this Friday with Bartlett. Trinity will also take on Barrington on April 5, and Lyons Township on May 19.
“Hopefully this will allow us to take a shot at entering the Top 5 rankings,” said Osborne.
