I read John Hubbuch’s column “Searching for a Christian” [Viewpoints, Dec. 14] searching for answers but was left with questions instead.

Is John really searching for a Christian (as defined by him)? It seems more like it’s just his way of pointing out that his “Christian” friends aren’t actually Christians. (And if they aren’t, why does he care?)

Also, why does John say, “the Apostles’ Creed is like a ‘mission statement’ for Christianity”? It’s simply a list of beliefs, whereas a Christian mission statement describes a Christian’s purpose or goals for their life. “Go to every nation and make people my followers” and/or “Love God and love other people” would seem like plausible choices, but not a creed, albeit a very historic and central one.

I used to search for people based on beliefs, including the Apostles’ Creed, and found them. Then I realized I wanted to be around people whose characters and lives reflect such things as kindness, generosity and the ability not to take life too seriously, people who inspire me to embody more of those qualities. I’ve found these people and they include Christians, ‘Christians,’ and many others.

I did appreciate the part where John says Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas to you, too, John. I hope you (like the Magi) find what you’re searching for and when you do, that you aren’t disappointed.
