To some kids, the words “summer” and “education” just don’t seem to go together. But for the over 400 area children who participated during June’s BASE Camp, learning was downright fun.

The program to “Build A Summer Education” (BASE) started their summer off well by dissecting squid, building models with real architecture tools, programming original design robots to move ping pong balls, discovering the history of HeLa cells while painting the Home Avenue underpass mural, setting in motion LEGO vehicles with various energy sources, and more.

Nine varied camps were run by the Oak Park Education Foundation and photos can be found on the website, www.opef.org. Special thanks goes out to our fabulous teachers and youth teaching assistants who brought their enthusiasm for science and the arts to these summer learners. And to JC Licht for donating many gallons of paint and Dressel’s Hardware for donating massive drop cloths for the Genetic Mural Project.

We are very grateful for their support of BASE Camp.

Let the summer fun roll on!
