In response to “Why I’m voting straight Republican” [Viewpoints, June 20], it is surprising sometimes the selective memory people have. I am hardly a cheerleader for President Obama. However, I become frustrated when I hear misinformation and other comments that neglect history.

It would benefit to look at history to see which presidents increased our national debt by the greatest percentage. Do this research and you will find that over the last 30 years Republican presidents win that title. Furthermore, a recent study found that government spending under President Obama increased slower than any president in the past 30 plus years. However, if you listen to conservative commentary you would never hear that.

The Democratic Party has presented many solutions to our national deficit and debt problem. However, without Republican votes, those policies cannot be enacted. Or would you rather the Democratic Party assume a dictatorship over the nation and enact policy without majority vote?

Furthermore, you cannot simply ignore the actions of the Bush administration. For the first time in our history we enacted tax cuts while engaging in two wars. How is that fiscally responsible? It is not.

It begs the question: Over the past 30 years, when have we had a fiscally responsible government while a Republican was president?

The answer is we haven’t. That is a fact shown through the large increases in national debt under Republican when compared to Democratic administrations.

Therefore, Mr. Bolen, if you have a problem with candidates promising to be fiscally responsible and not following through, then you may want you reconsider your choice to vote straight Republican, especially when it comes to the office of president.
