Illinois is in terrible financial shape. In May, the Democrats in Springfield passed a phony budget. They didn’t raise taxes; they didn’t cut spending. They just played budget games.
Governor Quinn’s solution is to raise the income tax after the election. The rest of the Democrats aren’t saying.
While Bruce Rauner is being criticized for not being specific enough on how he plans to control spending if he is elected, the Democrats who are already in office aren’t telling us what they will do.
Solving Illinois’ problems is not just about doing less or taxing more. It is about running the state more intelligently. States can be run more efficiently. They can do more for less. Mitch Daniels did it in Indiana. Scott Walker is doing it in Wisconsin.
I hope Bruce Rauner will get a chance to try in Illinois. I don’t know if the Democrats in the legislature will work with him, but at least with Bruce Rauner we will have a chance. With Pat Quinn, we will have none.
