Oak Park has a decades-long history of doing something in order to avoid having to do anything.
After the terrorist attack in Orlando on June 12, I was curious when the local gun control fans would start braying again for the Holy Trinity of Modern Gun Control – The 10-round, the AW ban and the universal check.
Sure enough, June 22, they were out in force in your opinion section.
Nowhere was there any mention of stopping murders and armed assaults — only gun control, conveniently impacting only citizens in good standing and conveniently avoiding going after the real causes of murder and armed assaults — the criminals, the dangerous mentally ill, the spousal abusers.
The June 22 Our Views proclaims Oak Park a “bold leader on the excesses of our gun culture.”
Are they kidding?
Vigils, speeches, coming together, an alliance between marginalized groups, blaming the NRA and Republicans, catching the murderers after the fact?
How is any of this stopping the criminals, the crazies and the spousal abusers?
Across Austin more shootings and murders have occurred this year than in all the incidents listed in “Bullet Points.” Yet the local gun control fans rarely mention or show interest in Chicago shootings.
Making a new alliance will once again allow Oak Park to do something about murders and armed assaults, without having to actually do anything.
